The American Township Police Department has been proudly serving the residents and visitors of American Township since 1925 when its first constable was sworn in.

Our police department currently boasts a roster of 13 sworn officers serving in various administrative, investigative and patrol assignments and are responsible for the safety of our 15,516 residents and visitors, which can number as high as 35,000. Several large malls, shopping centers and numerous restaurants are located within our approximate 25 square mile jurisdiction. Our officers are also tasked with the patrol of some 121+ miles of roadway and dozens of residential housing developments.

The department strives to utilize the most modern equipment and aids, such as laser, radar, mobile data terminals and on-board cameras to help provide the best service possible. We also try to maintain a proactive approach to law enforcement with community oriented policing techniques such as bike patrol and providing the valuable service of child ID and fingerprinting at our schools and various local events. Also, our officers participate in several state and federal programs aimed at enforcement in problem areas. One such program is the Federal Traffic Grant which steps up enforcement of traffic violations in areas which have a high rate of motor vehicle crashes. Another is the Cops-in-Shops program which places undercover officers in liquor sales establishments. The officers pose as employees and enforce under age violations as well as many other alcohol and drug related offenses.

It is the goal of the American Township Police Department to help provide and maintain a safe and secure environment for residents to live and raise families and guests to enjoy what American Township has to offer with pride and professionalism.
